Rottweiler

In 1979 I made my first acquaintance with a Rottweiler. This Rottweiler male was the first of many new acuaintances with dogs of this nice race. This story began, as almost always when you meet new people you immediately like, on a dog walk...

This particular dog walk took place in Älvsjö; the home of my childhood. In company of my first hovawart female Solei; I bumped in to a very nice girl with a Rottweiler male named Dacke. It turned out that we had a lot in common and the laps around Vantörsvägen became more with time. This nice girl; Ingela was a classmate with my younger brother Gunnar and that gave us even more to gossip about.

We met more often and pretty soon we became good friends. In this way I became more interested about Rottweiler the same way Ingela became more interested about Hovawart.

Together with a whole bunch of other girls we trained and competed in obedience with our dogs. Several of these girls became breeders later, for example Annika with kennel Ryegate’s Flatcoated Retriever, Kerstin with kennel Pearlrain’s Springer Spaniel and Bodil with kennel Argenta’s Schnauzer.

My friendship with Ingela went on for many years and a lot of times we talked about the joy of taking a Rottweiler litter of our own. This project was meeting on opposition regarding that Ingela always has had male dogs. It isn't that easy to start a breed with only male dogs. Lucky for us her first Rottweiler male was well qualified and mated a few females in relative high age. A male from one of these litters was used in following breeds.

We talked about the possibility to import a female of our own and start our bread with her. I had imported several Hovawart and it felt like a natural solution for me. The difficulty was that dogs of the kind we liked was found in Russia, South Africa and Australia! Everything was so far away.

When we got an offer to borrow a female, Rottiganz Birka for one litter in 2002; it felt like a really great oppertunity. In her pedigree Ingela's first dog was found even if it was far back and Ingela also had a brother to her. It felt like we knew a lot of that litter.

Anja; the name of the female; had just the kind of appearance we liked and she was also a good and cosy female. She had competed in obedience and had a good score in mental tests (Korning). She had also passed a military service course and been on several practical excercises even if she didn't got her military service title due to some error. She had proved to be an activ and workable female. She had a nice exterior and was also a big female of 62 centimeter. We both like Rottweiler with some height and litheness.

Now we searched for a suitable male instead! We searched the internet with one goal; if we shall start a bread of this race we shouldn't do it like everybody else does. We wanted to do it in a special way.

We searched everywere. We ended up in Russia again; but had some difficulties with the language! South Africa; a little to far away! And finally Australia… We e-mailed some with the kennel Kameraden, but we couldn't find anything suitable for us.

But then one early morning at work I found our dream prince, Blackcombe La Force. He was in my opinion absolutly fantastic. I could barely wait until the time when I could wake up Ingela and show him for her. The kenneln who owned him had a lot of pictures of his offsprings and we decided; It was him or no one. A careful e-mail contact was made. Ve got answer and after a few e-mails we asked if we could buy some sperm from him. No problem was the answer we got.

It took some time to get the deal sealed and of course we missed the first possible time for the female and had to wait for the next season. But when you wait for something good….

The second oppertunity came early and everything had to be hasten. We managed everything and Anja was inseminated on the precise right day. After a normal pregnantcy we got 8 live puppies; 1 male and 7 females.

The name issue was solved by naming them after famous Abba songs. Title well knowned in Australia and the rest of the world.

To combine Ingela's knowledge of the race and my solid experience of breeding proved to be a great idea. We are most pleased with the Abba-litters development; they all have free joints. They are very nice and social. Several undergoes military service courses; even thru delay because of the new rules. Some have competed in obedience and more are to come.

Unfortunally no more Rottweiler litters will be born in my bread, because my female is not good enough to breed on.
